In case you hadn’t heard, Thanet on Film II has been playing to packed cinematic houses the length and breadth of Thanet these last few months. Ever the ones with our fingers on the pulse, we thought we’d get in touch with Christine Tongue, the film’s producer, to ask her a few inane questions. Here’s the results:
IO:
Who the devil are you? [We already know the answer to this, see above].
CT:
Dunno – I forgot a long time ago….. I make films don’t I? Who are you?
IO:
We’re not here to answer your questions. What drives you?
CT:
I don’t drive, never have. Been run over twice… What motivates me is a burning desire to see Thanet at its best – and not ruined by bad political decisions and greedy developers. It’s a great place – and could be better!
IO: Okay then, what are you proud of?
CT:
I feel really pleased when I see a local cinema full of people who seem to be enjoying themselves – I watch the audience sighing over lost Thanet treasures and laughing at the jokes only a Thanet resident can understand. You don’t get that kind of feedback for your work with a website!
I feel least proud when I see the things that have been lost, and the things we may lose, and feel powerless to do anything about it. But, as Caroline Lucas says in the film, there is power in everyone here, and together we can make a difference. Think Tahrir Square! Vinceremos! – Oh, got my revolutions mixed up. But the role model’s there…
IO:
Are you suggesting that the people of Thanet should rise up against their oppressors?
CT:
Yes! Work out who’s oppressing you and rise up!
IO:
What is The Independent Media Society?
CT:
IMS is a group of local residents who put on and promote local events, and make films. If anyone has suggestions for the next film, please contact me on inmeds@yahoo.co.uk.
And with that, we ran out of questions.

Many thanks for your interest. There are more showings planned in Ramsgate and in Westgate.
Three more showings in Ramsgate scheduled at the Granville: Monday 21st at 2.30, Tuesday 22nd at 2.30, Thursday 31st March 7.30pm.
There’s also another showing of the Margate version at the Ursuline Convent school at 7pm, open to the public.
I see the films as community events, but for expats etc I may make dvds available. Please contact me after the last screenings. Unless you think there’s a London cinema that may be interested….. I’d love to show it in Leicester Square!
