Broadstairs Folk Week
Brace yourselves, everyone. Dust off your hurdy-gurdies, break out your fiddles and tabors, and fix your bladders to a stick – Broadstairs Folk Week is nearly here.
Now, for many people, the notion of big hairy men prancing about slapping each other with hankies is abhorrent. But Folk Week is much more than that – there’s big hairy women prancing about too… No, stop it, hahahaha, that’s enough, hahahaha.
Folk Week is a time when Broadstairs goes a bit crazy. And get this – even if you don’t like folk music (and, let’s be honest, who does?) you can still have a good time at Folk Week.

we live here & love folk week.
With all the talent & impromtu acts.
All the artistes and the visitors are always on their best behaviour.
wonderful.
We are pensioners and love the atmosphere that folk week brings.
Folk Week is great. And that’s official.
Folk week is dire, crap “music” and traffic at gridlock.
It has become too big for the town and mainly just an excuse to get drunk.
Chris – I’m not sure ‘gridlock’ is quite right. Certainly it’s busier than normal but it’s perfectly possible to drive from one end of Broadstairs to another.
Of course, the music can’t be to everyone’s taste but there’s undeniably a really good atmosphere in the town throughout the week and many businesses rely on a successful Folk Week.
I’m not on about the high street, i’m referring to the side roads.
In our road we don’t move the car for the week because you can’t get a space when you come back and the by saying gridlock, i mean convoys of cars in both directions meeting each other in our road with nowhere to pass each other so constant traffic reversing all the way back and fourth to the end of the road.
I work in broadstairs in catering, and yes we are a bit busier than normal, but have seen very few of our regulars this week because most of them take the week off work and go away.
So are you suggesting that Folk Week should be discontinued to ensure residents have all-year-round parking?
“because most of them take the week off work and go away” – I’m guessing its these people that moan about FW ?? Without it, town wouldn’t survive the winter. As for music, there are plenty of “non-folk” bands playing.
also Chris a lot of locals take the week off to enjoy the festival & eat out far more than usual so you may end up with more ‘regulars’.
It’s only one week of the year.. It brings in thousands of pounds to the local economy so deal with it!
Whether you like the music or not, there are some top quality musicians playing at Folk Week. Two to look out for are 4Square – 4 young very talented musicians who write their own music and Philip Henry who’s harmonica beat box playing is outstanding! Lots of the bands are great fun – the atmosphere in the Albion with the Bubble Band was fantastic. Where else can you see great bands in small, intimate venues. Roll on next year!
Best Folk Week ever to my memory. Highlights:
Green Diesel, ChumbaWumba.
Roll on next year
Controversial Statement:
Just think closure of Albion Street at weekends to traffic would be fantastic for Broadstairs.
I think that might be on the cards…
