Holidays in Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Margate

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

It’s not like we’re all rabid Guardian readers at IsleOne but following on from our post this week on the Guardian’s article on retro holidays in Broadstairs, towns in Thanet get name-checked again in a couple of pieces this weekend in the paper.

First, in Saturday’s Guardian, a reader’s photo of Broadstairs comes fourth in the supplement’s photo competition.

Second, in the Observer, there’s a full-page article on how we are falling back in love with the British seaside. According to the Observer, overseas trips fell by 15% last year as people chose instead to holiday in towns like Broadstairs because of the appeal of the traditional seaside resort.

Ramsgate and Brighton are mentioned in the same breath, as the article describes how Ramsgate went from fishing village to fashionable marine spa (and, of course, finally evolving in to today’s millionaire’s playground). And Margate gets a mention as the successor to Folkestone, Eastbourne and Hastings as the subject of urban renewal via arts festivals and galleries.

At this rate, Thanet is going to be inundated with Guardian readers all summer. I suppose that’s a good thing.

Now even the Guardian are spinning the ‘Ramsgate is the new Brighton’ line. It’s balderdash.
