IsleOne 2010 review

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

In a rubbish attempt to look like larger, more credible news sites run by proper journalists with their noses for stories, their official qualifications, and their disturbing sexual pecadilloes, we decided to do a round-up of our best stories – the ones that really show off the best side of Thanet.

But, as we looked back over our first few months, we came to realise that IsleOne has not been the force for good that was intended…

Here’s how:

Earlier this year, IsleOne created a major coup in the local blogging scene by signing the anonymous Ramsgate internet-sensation Eastcliff Richard on a pittance (his word, and ours). But the coup swiftly became an embarrassing and, some would say, sinister coup de grace as a few short weeks later ECR disappeared off the face of the Earth.

Okay, these things happen. Life went on and in September we carried a review of local restaurant and all-round disgrace, Harveys of Ramsgate. Nothing unusual there you might think. No – except that one month later, Harvey’s closed down.

Coincidence? Or is some more malign force at work here? After all, IsleOne is all about promoting the good things in the area. Throughout our brief existence, we’ve publicised all the places where Thanet has been recognised – from recommendations in the national press to its position in the top 10 worldwide destinations according to one global travel guide. Surely that can only be a good thing?

You’d think so wouldn’t you. But what’s actually been the end result? Homelessness and starvation for the local populace – as Thanet’s increased popularity has meant higher property prices and cost of living for people already living here.

Bugger.
