thanet gannet in his natural habitat
Any seaside town needs a really excellent fish restaurant. Ramsgate’s is Eddie Gilbert’s – a threefold combination of wet fish counter, fish and chip shop, and fish restaurant. The food is outstanding and on one occasion provided me with one of the defining moments of my life.
Equally excellent is Age and Sons in Charlotte Square. Age and Sons regularly update their menu but always feature local produce cooked authentically and inventively. Service is attentive, prices are reasonable and there’s a cocktail bar downstairs to round off the evening.
For a slightly more exotic restaurant you could do a lot worse than Patogh, on Effingham Street, which serves Persian food. When I went, I found the service spot on and you could taste the care and attention that had gone into the food.
Down on the seafront, overlooking the harbour, you can find the Belgian Bar which, as well as an intriguing menu and over 100 beers, has walls full of art for sale. My advice? Buy beers.
And finally, end as we begun – with fish and chips. It’s almost impossible to walk past Peter’s Fish Factory on the harbour without wanting to run in and order a cod and chips – though for the environmentally aware they also offer sustainable (and cheaper) species like saithe and pollack.
That’s our beginner’s guide to restaurants in Ramsgate. Feel free to tell us how wrong / right we are.
