Yesterday’s protest by skateboarders at Broadstairs bandstand.

About 20 skateboarders had spent the afternoon, well, skateboarding at the bandstand in Broadstairs. The protest was over the lack of a suitable place to skateboard in Broadstairs (apart, of course, from the bandstand itself and, oh yes, the skateboard place in St Peters).

The protest was broken up single-handedly by a policeman who failed to use any kettling or tasering techniques. Quite why the police chose to break up the protest at an otherwise deserted bandstand just before it got dark and all the children had to go home for their tea is unknown at this stage.

How totally ridiculous. My 21 month old little boy has his own skateboard and is a bit obsessed with them. We have been down to the bandstand many times and the kids and teenagers there are always really friendly and polite and let him play on their skateboard.

I can’t imagine they were creating any problems or causing damage.

This is mad. The St Peters skate place, rev, costs bare, and a lot of kids our age don’t have that money. If this was that much of a problem, the council would have sorted it by now. It’s just getting pathetic.

I have always found the teenager skaters down the bandstand very polite and considerate and yes there is the skateboard park at St Peters but these kids can’t afford to go every day. Surely better they hang out at the bandstand where there is CCTV and regular police patrols then go stealing cars, smashing windows and assaulting each other.

I say give them a break as we were all teenagers once !

I’m too old and stiff for a skateboard but let me know when the next protest in planned for and I’ll be down with a banner! ;-)

Great story. We’re using some of the comments on the local news today. 7:30/8:30/9:30 morning 15:30/16:30/17:30 afternoon.

The whole idea of skateboarding is that it can be done almost anywhere there is concrete. The whole ethos of it, is to make the most of what you have around you, not whinge and moan. As a skater since the late 1970′s we always built our own back yard ramps and arranged trips to skate parks much further a field. to places such as Rollingthunder (RIP).
Dan Chapman at Revolution should be applauded for what he has achieved, with constant battles with the council and the rising of rent and insurance. Rev is not expensive when all of this is taken into consideration.
Free skateparks are everywhere now, Deal, Sandwich to name a few.
Stop moaning or to quote an old Zorlac saying “shut up and skate”
