qingart at home in the shop

There’s no denying that the Old Town needs all the coverage it can get and tries very hard to get the message out about the fabulous changes that are happening. So you can imagine how delighted we all were when the boys from Immi Photography started a Facebook page for Margate Old Town. Already we are drawing in a crowd of supporters. I’m hoping we can add the bookshop that is opening this month on the Piazza, the vintage dress shop that’s coming and the Indian restaurant that looks to be taking one of the lovely harbour facing premises.

Be more adventurous and Google ‘Margate Old Town’ and you will come across a really useful website called…well, www.margateoldtown.co.uk, set up and run by Remembrance Angel and Qing, that helps you know who is who, what’s on and where. Details for Margate Carnival on the 31st July and 1st August are there along with dates of Dippers and Dunkers. The side show illusions are a must by the way, and as for the Sassy Sea Side Show in the Theatre Royal, I blush at the thought of last year’s performance!

It’s not all about the Old Town however, let’s cross pollinate a bit. We are blessed in Thanet to have such variety of exquisite places to go and things to do, from the gorgeous Old Town, to beautiful Broadstairs all the way down to Ramsgate, the jewel in the crown. You can have your cake and eat it… anywhere! Loads of cafes, things to do and stylish shops and galleries for you to browse, meet some lovely people and indulge yourself in that special little something. Brilliant.

    Is that the official term for Ramsgate now – the jewel in the crown? At least it hasn’t had its name changed to New Brighton… yet.

  2. Qingart says:

    Interesting, I don’t think I’m quite the authority to give a place an ‘official’ term yet…but I love the place, it’s beautiful!

  3. isleone says:

    So if Ramsgate is the jewel in the crown, and Broadstairs is the star of the sea, what does that make Margate?

  4. Qingart says:

    are we talking ‘Margate’, which the Council likes to promote…or the Old Town, which they tend to ignore but is gorgeous. I can think of two very different names! I know the typical response about Margate as a whole, but there are bits that are fantastic, let’s focus on the good bits!

    Maybe:

    Ramsgate, jewel in the crown;
    Broadstairs, star of the sea;
    Margate, the town with two names… ?

  6. Wanda Rogers says:

    Margate, the town with two names…? No, Margate Margate, so good they named it twice.

    The town with a split personality

    How cool would that be? Britain’s first schizo town.
