Waitrose moving to Broadstairs?

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

No idea if this is true or not, but apparently the latest addition to Broadstairs High Street won’t be another Lidl, Aldi or Co-op but will be a new branch of Waitrose. The former Poundstretchers site is rumoured to be earmarked for Waitrose.

What will be the effect of this? Will it be to the detriment of independents or will it actually help to draw people in to the town? Time will tell… but if it has to be another supermarket, then surely Waitrose is the pick of the bunch.

I was called recently by some organisation doing research for the council. The topic was Westwood Cross being the official shopping zone and did I approve of it being designated ‘officially’. I said I didn’t know because the tele-monkey couldn’t tell me what that meant in practice. But it’s rich to designate WC the official shopping area for the behemoths while at the same time allowing planning permission to further squeeze independent shops on the high street. Council being paid off by Tesco Value Schools or something?

  2. isleone says:

    What’s a behemoth?

I don’t know what the intricacies of the planning system are but if people didn’t shop in supermarkets there wouldn’t be so many of them.

  3. BGD says:

Behemoth: a very large thing (in this usage)
True, due to price (and convenience) but if small businesses incl the high street ,were considered more of a public good then perhaps a compromise could be found (rates, taxation, planning law etc)

  4. isleone says:

Apparently, the latest is that this unit is still not let. Not to Waitrose, not to no one. So no more behemoths in Broadstairs for the time being.

  5. Rich says:

I’d heard that rumour today as well. You’re right, waitrose would be the best of a bad bunch as at least it might attract more shoppers to the high St in general.
I cant see hoards of shoppers running down the street especially to visit a Co-op or Asda (Another Shit Dinner Again)

  6. isleone says:

So we heard that it was Waitrose, then we were told that no one had yet bought the lease. The Waitrose rumour might just be wishful thinking.

  7. Stella Maris says:

Poundstretchers isn’t going to be big enough for a Waitrose. BUT I have seen the plans for what they’re building on the corner of Vere Road and that will be where the Waitrose is. We are about to get a posh butcher on the corner of Pierremont so it stands to reason …

  8. isleone says:

We heard that too. Waitrose, organic butchers, we’ll be getting running water and inside toilets next.

  9. Stella Maris says:

    :D

If they open a Starbucks, I’m moving

  10. isleone says:

Don’t be silly. It’d be like living in Fulham.

  11. fred donohoe says:

Well I know that we are getting a co op on the vere road site, not sure re Waitrose would be nice though!

  12. Locals Only says:

oh look at all the Broadies getting all excited about the possibility of a Waitrose opening in Broadstairs. There is no chance of this, wake up. There is already a well established one in Ramsgate. Which all the middle classes from Broadstairs flock to in their 4X4′s with no thought for the local shops or the environment. I really do hope its a McDonalds or a Lidl or maybe a mobile phone unlocking shop, run by a shady gentleman of middle eastern decent.
You’re all so middle class it must hurt.

  13. isleone says:

Good point about Ramsgate, LO. That’s the thing about supermarkets – once they open a store in one town, they generally don’t bother opening any more…

  14. Sir Reginald says:

LO, would you please get below stairs you common little oik, cook needs a fire poking.

No supper until you have learnt how to communicate with your betters.

  15. Sir Reginald says:

Nanny has just chided me for my inelegant tone, she may on this occasion be correct.

Perhaps one speaks too freely, but Broadstairs was built on Victorian values. Authority, hierarchy, discipline and accepting one’s position in life. Without that we would have anarchy, or worse, socialism.

  16. Locals Only says:

Wasn’t the whole country built on Victorian values? In the Victorian era?

I’m so upper f***ing class I can only look down on you poor middle class scum. After all you’re only one step away from working class scum.

  17. Sir Reginald says:

LO, what goes up does not always come down and let me assure you that when it does, good breeding is all.

From your reply it would seem that you have little acquaintance with a good public school, so you may forgive me if I remain sceptical. A life where one has not found his place is one filled with discontent.

    Have you considered Margate?

  18. Sir Reginald says:

LO as I suggested, breeding is all dear boy.
