qingart at home in the shop
Summer is a time when Thanet is awash with activity and you really are spoilt for choice as to where to go. So to help you plan your time a little wiser I’ve included a few things going on the Northern side of the Isle, that’ll take you through to Autumn.
August 6th is the HKD Annual Picnic from 2pm on Marine Sands… not just any old picnic, there is the ‘Giant Knitting Nancy’ with them too!
August 13th Children’s author Anthony Brown, the current Children’s Laureate is coming to the Turner Contemporary as part of their ‘Generate’ family workshop programme. This will be combined with late night opening of the shops in the Old Town and other galleries exhibiting works. Do come in and say hello!
August 20th to 27th Dippers and Dunkers.
(At this point head south for Ramsgate Art’s Summer Squall 28th -30th August. A group of us have been working on this all year and it is going to be fantastic with events all over the place. )
September 9th the MACH project is launched (that’s Margate Arts Creativity Heritage… I think) a pioneering partnership between English Heritage and Arts Council England that will bring new investment to the town over the next three years. Come and find out what that’s all about and once again the Old Town is supporting it by staying open with shops and galleries alike late into the night.
September 25th the last of this year’s current Summer Markets in the Market Place. Let’s finish with a flourish.
October 2nd and 3rd… free time… Kite festival cancelled… (you heard it here first) [IsleOne note: Actually, our mistake... We have it on good authority (from the organisers themselves) that the kite festival is not cancelled. Take a look at http://www.bigskykitefestival.org.uk/ for more information.]
October 9th Big steam roller in the Old Town as the start of Pushing Print begins. Unfortunately we only roll over art… although requests may be considered.
And after that? Anybody’s guess! Not bad though eh!

The kite festival is cancelled? I heard it was up in the air.
Apparently, the kite festival is not cancelled. It seems someone was stringing us along.
Can I add a plug for an annual event in Ramsgate which urgently needs support – the historic Addington Street Fair takes place on 5 September. This was once a street full of shops, hostelries and galleries, now mainly residential but retaining the full charm of Georgian Ramsgate. There’s a street market, dressing up, walks and the Pinball Museum, so do go along and support one of the town’s most historic events.
Was the kite festival a succes and how many visitors did you get during the festival?
Hi Frances
You’d have to speak to the organisers of the kite festival for information on visitors.
Can we advertise the Michael Rosen Event we have coming up in Margate Theatre Royal, on your site please
Love Music Hate Racism presents Michael Rosen in Homemade Nonsense
Michael Rosen, Radio 4 broadcaster, author and former Children’s Laureate, brings his show to Margate for Love Music Hate Racism.
‘Nonsense’ is a collaboration between three of the members of the Homemade Orchestra, Tim Whitehead, Colin Riley and Liam Noble. Each have used the two books of Nonsense poetry by children’s poet Michael Rosen and created a musical setting. These have then been blended together to form a dramatic ‘nonsense story’. Michael Rosen, who performs with the orchestra, is the soloist reciting his poems within a string of musical sound worlds.
